June 2019

Greetings GWU Parents and Families!

I hope your summer is off to a good start. Often, the monthly newsletter focuses on continuing students and topics that could be helpful for their parents. For this month, the focus is shifting to the arrival of new students and a “Top 10” list of things you should encourage your student to do prior to arriving this fall.

  1. Finish their senior year well - stay engaged academically and relationally.
  2. Once their senior year ends, encourage them to take time to reflect on their high school experience.
  3. Begin to make a deeper connection to Gardner-Webb University by taking advantage of summer opportunities such as Jumpstart, Leadership Institute, or athletic camps.
  4. Reach out to their new roommate, new teammates, or faculty/staff.
  5. Have that awkward conversation with your student about expectations when they are at GWU, from frequency of communication, to missing them, etc…
  6. Help them make a list of things they want to do or people they want to visit prior to leaving for GWU. Then help them do it.
  7. Start gathering what they need for GWU, from a bed spread to extra iPhone chargers.
  8. Ask questions; if your student has a question, regardless of the topic, we want to help. Give anyone on campus a call.
  9. Help them start to explore where they are going to plug into this fall: clubs, organizations, local church, or local activities.
  10. Get a good night's sleep on August 15! We can’t wait for your student to arrive on campus and dive in!

If you are on campus, please stop by and introduce yourself. I am located in the Tucker Student Center. You and your student are important at Gardner-Webb.

Thank you,

Dr. Sarah A. Currie
Vice President of Student Development &
Dean of Students

P.S. Mark your calendar for Family Weekend, September 13-15, 2019.
