August 2018

Hello Parents and Families:

It is that time of year again, campus is coming alive. Throughout the month of August students begin to make their way to campus, from athletes to residential advisors, to new and returning students. Along with returning to campus, comes a mix of emotions for students, excitement and nervousness. In the first month of the semester, students are adapting to the college routine again. They are becoming familiar with their new class schedule, new expectations from professors, figuring out their friend group, and at moments missing home. Often parents and families are the primary support system for students during this time. I would encourage you to be available to your student when they need you. Yet, help them find the balance of living or engaging life on campus. It is important in the uncomfortable moments during college that they stay invested.

An opportunity to check in on your student and visit campus is Family Weekend. This year Family Weekend is September 14-16, 2018. You can participate in as much or as little as you want. It kicks off on Friday night with “Sweet Bingo,” who doesn’t enjoy desserts and bingo? Plus, you could win neat apparel from the Campus Shop. Then join us on the quad for a movie on the lawn. Events for the rest of the weekend include: the Rescue Race, a Tailgate, the GWU vs. WCU football game, and a family worship service.
