Commencement Instructions

[Please note: Plans for Summer Commencement are contingent upon the discontinuation of state, federal and local social distancing regulations prior to August 1. Refer to the University’s website for updates.]

  1. PHOTOGRAPHS –A professional photographer will photograph each candidate receives his/her diploma from the President, and after each graduate exits the stage. Proofs will be emailed to each student at the email address they provide GWU. Students may place orders from any of those professional proofs. The photographer works in partnership with Gardner-Webb University and will work directly with each student.   1. COMMENCEMENT –The commencement ceremony schedule:

*Saturday, August 1, 2020 - 10:00 a.m. for all Undergraduate Programs in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center

*Saturday, August 1, 2020 – 3:00 p.m. for all Graduate Programs in the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center

  • Undergraduate students - Assemble in the Dover Theatre located within the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center on Saturday, August 1, 2020 by 8:30 a.m.
  • Graduate students - Assemble in the Dover Theatre located within the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center on Saturday, August 1, 2020 by 1:30 p.m.

PLEASE BE PROMPT. Once you are in the line, DO NOT leave your assigned place. Any changes made to the assembly of graduates will be emailed to each graduate via their Gardner-Webb email address.

  1. ACADEMIC ATTIRE –You will need to order your cap, gown, hood and tassel online ( Expenses related to academic regalia are the responsibility of the student.
  1. CAPS –Caps should be level, not tilted to either side or back.  All undergraduate candidates wear the tassel on the right front quadrant of the cap.  You will be instructed to move your tassel to the left after you all have received your diplomas.

Women wear caps throughout the entire service. Men wear caps to their seats, and then remove them for the invocation and other prayers

  1. GOWNS –Dark clothing should be worn with the regalia. Women should wear dark dresses or pants and dark shoes. Men should wear dark pants, dark shoes and dark socks; white shirts and dark neckties. 
  1. SHOES -Women may want to consider comfortable shoes as the graduates will be led to the Stadium, weather permitting.
  1. LINE OF MARCH -The marshals will place you in line and indicate for you the route to be followed. Watch your marshals and follow their directions. Once inside the arena, keep together in pairs with the distance constant between you.
  1. GUESTS - There is no limit to the number of guests you may invite to attend, assuming good weather. Contingency plans for bad weather will be provided closer to the date of graduation.
